New Virginia property opens a world of opportunities

Our new Virginia property in Mathews is an extension of the organization’s Northeast Region, based in Medford, New York. This historic property is in addition to our other seven regional training centers and supports local clients and volunteers while continuing to place more expertly trained service dogs with people with disabilities in the Virginia area, at no cost to them.

Currently, Canine Companions serves 77 service and facility dog teams in Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington DC. The organization is supported by more than 400 existing volunteers in the area.

The historic Hampton Roads area of Virginia is home to nearly two million people and is known for its large military presence and its hundreds of historical sites and attractions.

Canine Companions Serves Veterans!

In April, Canine Companions held a grand opening for its new property in Mathews, an addition that’s important to the future of the organization. “We’ve had a Veterans Initiative for decades, so we’re excited to serve more veterans from this area.”, says Canine Companions CEO Paige Mazzoni. The historic 220-acre estate was donated by the Helen and Murray Main Foundation, and will be home to workshops for clients and volunteer puppy raisers, outreach events and eventually Team Training classes and graduations for veterans.
